Getting a career training is a good way for you to jumpstart your skills. This is also advisable to those who are currently mulling over a career shift. Nobody is ever too old to go back to school to retrain and acquire new skills for work.

There are just a few important tips you need to consider before you get into a training school.

Identify your purpose – For those who will be funded by their employers, this would no longer be much of a problem. But if you are among those who are simply going to pay for your own education, you have to plan first before plunging into a career training. What do you hope to achieve? Where will you use what you will learn? These are important things to consider because your career training will be identified by your professional goals.

Location is important – If you are currently working, you might want to choose a location that’s near your place especially if you plan to go to the training straight from work. But if you are simply getting there on weekends, choosing a training school near your home might be better. This way you can really work around the schedules to your current one.

Know the completion time – Most of these career training modules require a number of hours before you can get a certificate of completion. The good thing is some schools would give you the liberty to adjust your completion time according to the schedule you have. This way it will be easier for you to attend to the training sessions even if you currently have work or other commitments. It is also important to know the allowable schedules for you to choose from.

Career development is something that you work on throughout your lifetime. So long as you are still employed or have a business of your own, you need to understand that developing a career is something that you need to do over a long period of time. You have to be conscientious and consistent in your ways.

1. Have a Plan and Track Your Progress

Most people enter into a job without really an agenda in mind. Notice how most companies implement the 6-month probie period? This is the time they will give you to adjust and also to cope with the changes happening in your work. After the 6-month period, that’s the only time you will know if you will be a regular employee or not.

You can also use this probie period to assess your fit for the position. Do you enjoy it? Do you see yourself still doing the same thing more than a year from now? Would you want to hold a managerial position in the same company? Are you satisfied with your job and the employer so far? The good thing about having your first ever job is that you still have plenty of years to spare to try other things-that is if you are also a fresh graduate.

Great employees are almost always the first ones to quit, while poor employees often get fired. Great employees generally don’t mind quitting because they’re confident about finding better opportunities somewhere. However, when great employees quit, it’s bad news for employers. Recruiting and training top talent is expensive, and losing them so soon is a waste of money and precious time. Recruitment alone costs a third of an employee’s annual salary.

So what keeps great employees from quitting so soon?

To answer this question, it helps to learn why they quit. High employee turnover signals distress. It indicates that the working environment is unsafe or unhealthy, or that workers are not well-compensated, unrecognized and unappreciated, or not provided with opportunities to grow. Unrealistic expectations, ineffective recruitment, low compensation, bad practices, job dissatisfaction, and conflict in the workplace cause labor turnover.
